Olava Karen Pedersdatter was born at Benerud in Eidsvoll, Norway, daughter of Peder Pettersen and Anne Soffie Jonsdatter.  She was baptized and confirmed at the Eidsvoll Church and attended realskole at Eidsvoll.  She came with her parents to New York on the Haakon Adelsten, arriving on June 24, 1875, and then proceeded by train to Sparta, WI, where they were met by Lars Anderson and brought to the Cashton area.  On August 10, 1975, she wrote a letter to her aunt and uncle, Ole and Christiane Blikkelsrud, telling about the trip.  On March 7,1876, she married Joseph Lee (1847-1946), who had come from Eidsvoll in 1869.  They lived on a farm near Portland Center until they retired and moved to Cashton.

Olava and Joseph Lee had ten children: Leonard (1877-1942); Aletta, Mrs. Peter Peterson (1879-1975); Ole (1881-1947); Johann Alfred (1883-83); Emma, Mrs. Henry Peterson (1886-1978); Lenora, Mrs. Carl Homstad (1888-1976); John (1891-1921); Louis (1893- 1984); Paul Albert (1895-1995); and Stella, Mrs. Fred Andersen (1897-1996).
